1. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Remove the starter (see section 16).

3. Disconnect the flat braided wire from the relay that goes to the starter stator.
4. Unscrew the two screws securing the relay to the starter.
5. Turn the relay counterclockwise to disconnect its flange from the starter housing (see illustration).
17.5. To remove the relay from the starter, unscrew the mounting screws and, turning the relay counterclockwise, remove it from the starter housing
Installation
6. To install the relay, first make sure the return spring is correctly seated on the core, then, with the solenoid flange inserted into the starter housing, turn the solenoid clockwise until the core engages with the engaging lever.
7. Tighten the two relay mounting screws and connect the starter stator terminal to it.
