First generation (J300; 2008–2016)
On August 21, 2008, GM released official images of the Cruze, internally designated J300. GM's Daewoo division in South Korea played a leading role in the design and development of the Cruze, along with Opel's German division. Body styles included a 4-door sedan, a 5-door hatchback, and a 5-door sedan (since 2011) and a 5-door station wagon (since 2012).
The car is based on the Delta II platform, the engine is located in the front with a drive to the front wheels. The body structure is 65 percent high-strength steel. The front suspension is MacPherson type with hydraulic supports instead of silent blocks and A-shaped levers. The rear H-shaped beam with springs. The car turned out to be very quiet due to good sound insulation and a special four-point engine mount.
The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) awarded the Cruze a full five stars in its crash safety test, with 35.04 out of a possible 37 points. The China New Car Assessment Program (C-NCAP) awarded the Cruze the maximum five stars in its crash safety test. The Cruze SE 1.6 tested returned a maximum of 16 points in the side impact, 14.44 in the frontal impact and 15.73 in the 40 per cent frontal offset crash. Euro NCAP also gave the full five stars. The car scored 96 per cent for adult protection, 84 per cent for child protection and a substandard 34 per cent for pedestrian protection.

The 2013 Cruze received a minor facelift and was unveiled at the 2012 Busan Motor Show in South Korea. The car received a new front end, air vents around the completely redesigned fog lights, and the grille and headlights also received minor updates. Cosmetic modifications were also made in 2014.
Second generation (J400; 2016-present)
In 2013, Chevrolet announced the launch of the second generation Cruze in late 2015, and the release was originally planned for late 2014. The delay was caused by engineering changes. For the Chinese market, the car was presented at the Beijing Auto Show in 2014 and official sales began in August of the same year. The car is built on the GM D2XX platform. The body is available in two versions - a 4-door sedan and a 5-door hatchback. The body of the Chinese version is shorter by 10 cm, the wheelbase is shorter by 5 cm.
