Basics of safe vehicle operation (Chevrolet Niva 1)

Contents: Driver's seating behind the wheel ↧ Preparing the car for movement ↧ Operating a new car ↧ Parking a car with the tailgate open ↧
Following the recommendations below will significantly increase your safety on the roads and keep your vehicle in good condition.

Precautions when operating the vehicle The vehicle is easy to operate and has good cross-country ability on sandy, snowy and wet dirt roads. However, it should always be remembered that the vehicle is not designed for continuous operation in difficult road conditions.

For lubrication of units and assemblies, filling the fuel tank, use materials recommended by the manufacturer, Appendix 1.

Attention. Do not operate the vehicle with the low oil pressure indicator light on. The light may be on at minimum crankshaft speed in idle mode. A light on at medium engine speeds indicates insufficient pressure in the lubrication system, which may lead to its failure. If this malfunction occurs, contact your dealer of ZAO GM - AVTOVAZ.

Caution. Never allow the engine to run at a crankshaft speed at which the tachometer needle is in the solid red zone of the scale. A tachometer needle in the red zone with a hatching indicates that the crankshaft speed is approaching the maximum permissible value.

Attention
  • Operating tires at pressures other than those recommended will result in premature wear and tear, as well as reduced vehicle stability and control.
  • If the "Check Engine" indicator light comes on while the engine is running, this does not mean that the engine should be stopped immediately - the controller has backup modes that allow the engine to operate under conditions close to normal. However, the cause of the malfunction should be determined by a dealer of ZAO "GM - AVTOVAZ" as soon as possible.
  • The CHEVROLET NIVA is equipped with an engine with a neutralizer and an oxygen concentration sensor, which is designed to use only unleaded gasoline. Leaded gasoline quickly disables these elements, smoky exhaust appears and fuel consumption increases sharply.
  • The neutralizer is an expensive unit that ensures compliance with environmental protection requirements. The neutralizer may also fail in the event of misfires in the ignition system, since in this case the fuel will ignite in the neutralizer, and the temperature in it will increase sharply, which will lead to damage to the catalytic block. Therefore, if misfires occur - interruptions in engine operation and jerking when driving the car - you need to stop driving, turn off the engine and take measures to deliver the car to the dealer of ZAO "GM - AVTOVAZ".

To prevent misfires, regularly perform all maintenance work on the ignition system prescribed by the Service Book at your ZAO GM-AVTOVAZ dealer.

Caution: To avoid damage to the neutralizer, do not start the engine by towing the vehicle and under no circumstances use the starter to move the vehicle.

Warning: Since the neutralizer located under the bottom of the car has a high operating temperature, make sure that when parking the car there is no dry grass or other flammable material - rags, paper, wood chips, etc. - under the neutralizer.

Driver's seating behind the wheel

Warning. Safe driving technique largely depends on the correct driver's seating position. Correct seating position means that the driver rests firmly on the seat back, the legs are not fully extended when the pedals are fully extended, and both arms, slightly bent at the elbows, hold the upper part of the steering wheel. The body position should be stable, but not tense - this prevents rapid fatigue.

Preparing the car for movement

Attention: Before leaving the garage or parking place, check the technical condition of the car.

To do this:

1. Check and adjust the air pressure in the tires to the norm, see Table 1. A difference in tire pressure of only 0.02-0.03 MPa worsens the car's handling, and when braking, it can cause it to skid.

2. Check the oil level in the engine crankcase and top it up to normal if necessary.

3. Check the levels of coolant, brake and washer fluids and top them up if necessary.

4. Check the fluid level in the power steering reservoir and top it up to normal if necessary.

5. Check the serviceability of the external lighting fixtures.

6. Check the operation of the windshield wipers, windshield washers and parking brake.

7. Check that mirrors, seats and seat belts are installed correctly.

8. Inspect the parking place of the car. The presence of traces of oils and operating fluids under the car indicates that its units and assemblies are not tight. In this case, you must contact the dealer of ZAO GM - AVTOVAZ to identify and eliminate the causes of their appearance.

9. Before starting to move, check the serviceability of the service brakes.

Operating a new car

Attention. During the first 3000 km of a new car:

1. When driving, do not exceed the speed of 100 km/h.

2. Towing a trailer or another vehicle is prohibited.

3. Shift to a lower gear in the gearbox in time according to driving conditions, avoiding engine overload.

Parking a car with the tailgate open

Warning: When parking your vehicle in the dark with the tailgate open to its maximum angle, use the hazard warning sign stops.
