Note: If constant velocity joint repairs are required (usually due to damaged protective covers), then think through all the options before starting work. If it is possible to replace old axle shafts with reconditioned ones on an exchange basis, this will save a lot of time and effort. Whatever you decide, find out the cost and availability of all parts before disassembling.
1. Remove the axle shaft (see section 2).
2. To avoid damaging the shaft, clamp the axle shaft in a vice, wrapping it in a rag.
