Diagnosing a Drive Belt for Excessive Wear (Chevrolet Captiva 1)

            0

Contents: Diagnostic information ↧ Description of the test ↧
Definition: Wear on the outer ribs of the drive belt due to improper installation.

Diagnostic information

Excessive drive belt wear is usually caused by improper installation or use of the wrong belt.

Minor misalignment of the drive belt pulley will not cause excessive wear, but may likely cause increased belt noise or may cause the belt to slip off the pulley.

Excessive accessory drive pulley misalignment will cause excessive wear and may also result in belt slippage.

Description of the test

The numbers below refer to the operations in the diagnostic table:

2. This inspection is to determine if the drive belt is installed correctly on all accessory drive pulleys. Worn drive belts can be caused by being positioned on the wrong pulley track.

3. Installing a drive belt that is too wide or too narrow will cause it to wear out. The ribs of the drive belt must match all the grooves on the pulleys.

4. This inspection should determine if the drive belt contacts any engine or body components while the engine is running. There should always be sufficient clearance when the load on the accessory drive components changes. The drive belt should not contact the engine or body components under any conditions.
