General inspection (Chevrolet Niva 1)

If there are any problems with the steering system (knocking, increased free play of the steering wheel or, conversely, its tight rotation, etc.) inspect the steering components. Inspect on a ramp or inspection pit in the following order.

Clean the steering gear parts and the steering gear housing from dirt. Set the wheels to a position corresponding to driving straight ahead.

Install the ISL-M device on the vehicle and check the total play of the steering control:

• the total play of the steering wheel should not exceed 10°;
• there are no knocks in the joints, connections and steering mechanism;
• the fastening of the steering gear housing and the pendulum arm bracket is secure (tighten threaded connections if necessary);
• there is no free play in the ball joints of the rods and in the pendulum arm bracket, and the worm shaft does not move in the axial direction.

By turning the adjusting couplings of the side rods, make sure that their clamps are securely tightened.

Check the condition of the ball joints and protective caps as follows.
