Removal
1. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Remove the pump drive belt (see chapter 1).
3. Place a container under the vehicle to collect the fluid. Disconnect the drain pipe (see illustration). Drain as much fluid as possible, then remove the drain line from the pump.
19.3. Disconnect the power steering pump drain line at this location (indicated by the arrow) and drain the liquid from the system
4. Using a spanner and an auxiliary wrench to prevent the line from twisting, disconnect the high pressure hose (see illustration) from the pump.
19.4 Using a spanner, disconnect the high pressure line (indicated by the arrow)
5. If you plan to install a new pump, remove the pulley using the special puller J-25034-B and unscrew the bolt using the tool J-37609 (see illustration) before you remove the pump mounting bolts. Loosen the pump mounting bolts and remove the pump from the engine; do not spill any remaining liquid (see illustrations).
19.5a. Using special devices GM J-37609 and J-25034-B (or similar), unscrew the power steering pump pulley |
19.5b. Power steering pump and reservoir parts: 1 - pump, 2 - reservoir, 3 - clamp, 4 - pulley, 5 - bolt (3 pcs.), 6 - poly V-belt |
19.5v. If you do not remove the pump pulley, you can access the pump mounting bolts by rotating the pulley to align its holes with each of the bolts
Installation
6. Position the pump on the bracket and tighten the bolts.
7. Connect the supply and drain pipes to the pump.
8. If you are going to replace the pump, use the special tool GM J-36015 to install the pulley on the new pump (see illustration).
19.8 Using GM tool J-36015, install the pump pulley
9. Fill the reservoir with the recommended type of hydraulic fluid and bleed the system as described in section 20.
