Withdrawal
1. Disconnect the wire from the negative battery terminal.
2. Remove pump drive belt (see chapter 1).
3. Place a container under the vehicle to collect the liquid. Disconnect the drain pipe (see illustration). Drain as much fluid as possible, then remove the drain line from the pump.
19.3. Disconnect the power steering pump drain line at this location (indicated by an arrow) and drain the system
4. Using a ring wrench and an auxiliary wrench to prevent kinking of the pipeline, disconnect the high pressure hose (see illustration) from the pump.
19.4. Using a box wrench, disconnect the high pressure line (indicated by an arrow)
5. If you plan to install a new pump, remove the pulley using J-25034-B puller and remove the bolt using J-37609 (see illustration) before you remove the pump mounting bolts. Turn away bolts of fastening of the pump and remove the pump from the engine; do not spill the remaining liquid (see illustrations).
19.5a. Using Special Tools GM J-37609 and J-25034-B (or similar), unscrew the power steering pump pulley | 19.5b. Details of the power steering pump and steering reservoir: 1 - pump, 2 - reservoir, 3 - clamp, 4 - pulley, 5 - bolt (3 pcs.), 6 - V-ribbed drive belt |
19.5c. If you do not remove the pump pulley, you can get to the pump mounting bolts by turning the pulley to align its holes with each of the bolts
Installation
6. Position the pump on the bracket and tighten the bolts.
7. Connect the supply and drain lines to the pump.
8. If you are replacing the pump, use the special tool GM J-36015 to install the pulley on the new pump (see illustration).
19.8. Using tool GM J-36015, install the pump pulley
9. Fill the reservoir with the recommended type of hydraulic fluid and bleed the system as described in section 20.
