2. Remove the tie rod ends (see section 16).
3. Remove the lock nuts and outer clamps of the protective boot (see illustration).

4. Cut off both inner straps of the protective cover and discard them.
5. Mark the location of the breather tube, then remove the protective covers and tube (see illustration).

6. Install a new clamp on the inner end of the protective cover.
7. Apply universal grease to the steering rod and the mounting groove on the steering gear (see illustration).

8. Align the breather tube with the marks made during removal and move the protective boot onto the steering gear housing.
9. Check that the cover is not twisted, then tighten the clamp.
10. Install the outer tie rod end clamps and nuts.
11. Install the tie rod ends and tighten the nuts securely.
12. Install the steering gear.
