Check starter interlock (every 7,500 miles or 12 months) (Chevrolet Lumina 1)

Warning: When performing the following checks, there is a possibility that the vehicle may roll forward, causing damage or injury to people. Position the vehicle so that there is plenty of space in front of it, set the parking brake and press the brake pedal while performing the checks.

1. Try to start the engine in each gear. The engine should only be started with the gearshift lever in the "PARK" or "NEUTRAL" position.

2. Make sure that the steering column lock allows the key to enter the "LOCK" position only when the gear shift lever is moved to the "PARK" position.

3. The ignition key should only be removed when it is in the "LOCK" position.
