Diagnosis of creaking and rattling noises

Rattling from the longitudinal beam

Examination
Operation, action
Check the brake lines.
  • Tap the brake lines lightly and listen for a rattling sound.
  • Install the plastic connector pads and firmly attach the brake lines to each other.

Rattling noise from under the car at high revs

Examination
Operation, action
Check the contact of the heat shield with the lower part of the body.
  • Raise the vehicle and perform a visual inspection.
  • Bend the heat shield slightly to create a gap with the underbody.

Squeaking noise from front of car in cold weather

Examination
Operation, action
Check the front stabilizer link insulators.
  • On a cold vehicle, perform a test drive and achieve full front suspension travel by driving through a depression in the road.
  • Remove the insulators and wrap Teflon tape around the stabilizer rod. Install the insulators over the tape.

Muffled thumps in the rear of the car on bumps

Examination
Operation, action
Check that the spare wheel is correctly secured in the trunk.
  • Open the trunk and perform a visual inspection of the spare tire and tools.
  • Securely fasten the spare tire and all tools.
  • Perform a test check and make sure the noise disappears.

Glass knocking sound in the rear of the car when driving over bumps

Examination
Operation, action
Check that the rear end door lock is not out of adjustment.
  • Test drive the vehicle to confirm this condition.
  • Loosen the lock nuts and lower it down.

Rattling from the door

Examination
Operation, action
Check the door lock electromagnet.
  • Remove the door trim panel and check if the electromagnet is loose.
  • Tighten the electromagnet bolts.
Check if the electrical connectors under the door trim panel are rattling.
  • Tap lightly on the trim panel and listen to the rattle.
  • Remove the trim panel and, if necessary, place foam padding around the connectors.

Squeaking sound when opening and closing doors

Examination
Operation, action
Check if there is enough grease in the door hinges.
  • Open and close the doors and listen to the creaks.
  • Lubricate the door hinges with liquid oil and cover with consistent grease.

Squeaks from console when shifting gears on manual transmission (the condition manifests itself in cold weather with a cold engine)

Examination
Operation, action
Check the lower casing of the manual transmission control lever.
  • Move the control lever between gears and listen to the squeaks.
  • Remove the floor console and replace the lower control arm cover or apply talcum powder to the cover.

Buzzing noise on the left side of the instrument panel

Examination
Operation, action
Check the vibration of the fuse box cover relative to the side trim of the instrument panel.
  • Tap the lid lightly with your finger and listen to the buzzing sound.
  • Install 6.35mm felt pad (0.250 inches) by 25.4 mm (1.00 inches) on the side trim at the point of contact of the lid.

Squeaks from the instrument cluster trim

Examination
Operation, action
Check for contact between the instrument cluster trim and the instrument panel.
  • Test drive the vehicle to confirm this condition.
  • Remove the instrument cluster trim and install felt pads on the edges.

Elimination of creaking and rattling

Squeaks and rattles are caused by unwanted friction between different parts of the car. There are three ways to prevent squeaks and rattles.
  • Securely attach the parts to each other to prevent relative movement during vehicle operation.
  • Separate the parts so that there is no contact between them during operation.
  • Isolate the parts so that there are no creaks or rattles when they move. To eliminate uneven movement, you can use universal surfaces with a low coefficient of friction.
