Inner Hinge Protective Cover (Chevrolet Captiva 1)

Removal procedure



1. Remove the axle shaft from the vehicle. See "Drive axle assembly" in this section.

2. Remove the large clamp securing the protective cover. Remove the clamp.

3. Remove the small clamp securing the protective cover. Remove the clamp.

3. Remove the small clamp securing the protective cover. Remove the clamp.


4. Pry and separate the retaining ring from the hinge housing.

5. Remove the hinge housing from the casing.

6. Degrease the hinge block

7. Using J-8059 pliers, remove the axle retaining ring.

7. Using J-8059 pliers, remove the axle retaining ring.


8. Remove the joint and the joint retaining ring from the wheel drive axle shaft.



9. Remove the cover from the wheel drive axle.

9. Remove the cover from the wheel drive axle.


Assembly procedure



1. Place the small clamp on the protective casing. Do not tighten the casing fastening clamp.

2. Place the protective cover on the wheel drive axle.

3. Install the hinge retaining ring and hinge onto the wheel drive axle.

3. Install the hinge retaining ring and hinge onto the wheel drive axle.


4. Using the J-8059 snap ring pliers, place the snap ring onto the axle shaft.

4. Using the J-8059 snap ring pliers, place the snap ring onto the axle shaft.


5. Pour 140 - 160 g into the hinge housing (5.0 - 5.6 oz) recommended lubricant. Protective cover with 140 - 160 g (5.0 - 5.6 oz) of the recommended lubricant and install it back onto the axle shaft.



6. Install the snap ring and hinge housing onto the hinge block.

7. Install a new large guard retaining clamp. Crimp the large guard retaining clamp using J-35566 pliers.

8. Crimp the small clamp securing the protective cover using the J-35566 pliers.

9. Insert the axle shaft into the vehicle. See "Drive axle assembly" in this section.
