Cardan shaft — removal and installation (Chevrolet Captiva 1)

Removal procedure



1. Move the gearbox to neutral.

2. Lifting and supporting the car.

3. Place an index mark indicating the position of the propeller shaft relative to the rear drive unit flange.

4. Place a support under the propeller shaft where the rear drive unit is located.

5. Remove the bolts securing the propeller shaft fork flange to the rear drive unit flange.

5. Remove the bolts securing the propeller shaft fork flange to the rear drive unit flange.


6. Place an index mark indicating the position of the propeller shaft relative to the power take-off unit (PTU) flange.

7. Place a support under the driveshaft where the PTU is located.

8. Remove the bolts securing the propeller shaft to the PTU flange.

8. Remove the bolts securing the propeller shaft to the PTU flange.


9. Place a support under the driveshaft where the support bearing is located.



10. Remove the bolts securing the propeller shaft support bearing to the lower part of the vehicle body.

11. While supporting the driveshaft, move it rearward to disengage the constant velocity joint from the PTU flange.

12. Remove the propeller shaft from the vehicle.

Assembly procedure



1. Support the driveshaft at the front, middle and rear and install it on the vehicle.

2. Thoroughly clean the center bearing mounting bolts to the vehicle and apply threadlocker, Saturn part number 21005994 (part Number for Canada: 10953488), on the bolt threads.

3. Install, but do not tighten, the support bearing mounting bolts.

4. Pull the front section of the driveshaft rearward and install the driveshaft onto the PTU flange.



5. Align the index marks on the constant velocity joint of the cardan shaft and the PTU flange.

6. Thoroughly clean the driveshaft flange mounting bolts and apply threadlocker, Saturn part number 21005994 (part Number for Canada: 10953488), on the bolt threads.

7. Install the front propeller shaft mounting bolts.

Tighten

Tighten the bolts to 25 Nm (19 ft·lbs).

Tighten the bolts to 25 Nm (19  ft·lbs).


8. Align the index marks on the propeller shaft fork flange and the rear drive unit flange and install the propeller shaft.

9. Thoroughly clean the fork mounting bolts and apply threadlocker, Saturn part number 21005994 (part Number for Canada: 10953488), on the bolt threads.

10. Install the bolts on the driveshaft fork and the rear drive unit flange.

Tighten

Tighten the bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft·lbs).

11. Tighten the support bearing mounting bolts.

Tighten

Tighten the bolts to 25 Nm (19 ft·lbs).

12. Remove the support stands from the propeller shaft.

13. Lower the car.
