1.1. Bottom view of the automatic transmission and related components: 1 - transmission cooling system pipeline, 2 - transmission housing
Due to the complexity of the device and the hydraulic control system, as well as the need to use special equipment and the need for experience in carrying out major repairs of an automatic transmission, major repairs should not be carried out on your own. Therefore, this chapter is limited to describing the procedures for general diagnostics, routine maintenance, adjustment, removal and installation of the automatic transmission.
If the automatic transmission requires significant repair work, it should be taken to an automotive or transmission repair shop.
You can, however, remove and install the gearbox yourself, which will reduce the cost of repairs, even if they are performed in a workshop.
Replacement and adjustment can be done at home, including the operations of connecting the throttle cable and connecting the lever.
Caution: Do not tow a disabled vehicle with an automatic transmission at speeds greater than 35 mph or for distances greater than 50 miles with its front wheels in contact with the road.
Note: On models equipped with the Delco Loc II audio system, make sure the audio lock is disengaged before performing any operations that require disconnecting the battery.
