The engine does not start — the crankshaft does not turn (Chevrolet Captiva 1)

Cause
Elimination
A component of the auxiliary drive system is seizing.
  1. Remove the accessory drive belts.
  2. Turn the crankshaft manually by holding the pulley or flywheel.
The cylinder is hydraulically locked.
  • Coolant/antifreeze has entered the cylinder
  • There is oil in the cylinder
  • Fuel got into the cylinder
  1. Remove the spark plugs and check for fluid in them.
  2. Check if the cylinder head gasket is damaged.
  3. Carefully inspect the engine block or cylinder head for cracks.
  4. Check the fuel injector for deposits.
Seizure of the automatic transmission torque converter with the final drive assembly.
  1. Loosen the torque converter bolts.
  2. Turn the crankshaft manually by holding the pulley or flywheel.
Seizure of a manual gearbox with the final drive assembly.
  1. Disengage the clutch.
  2. Turn the crankshaft manually by holding the pulley or flywheel.
Breakage of the timing chain and/or gear failure.
  • Inspect the timing chain and gears.
  • Repair if necessary.
The crankshaft is seizing.
  • Inspect the crankshaft.
  • Repair if necessary.
Foreign material in the cylinder.
  • Broken valve
  • Piston material
  • Foreign material
  • Carefully inspect the cylinder for damaged components and/or foreign material.
  • Repair or replace if necessary.
Seizure of the crankshaft or connecting rod bearings.
  • Carefully inspect the crankshaft and connecting rod bearings.
  • Repair if necessary.
The connecting rod is deformed or destroyed.
  • Check the connecting rods.
  • Repair if necessary.
The crankshaft is destroyed.
  • Inspect the crankshaft.
  • Repair if necessary.
