Removal and disassembling the rear brake (Chevrolet Niva 1)

Raise the rear of the car and remove the wheel.

With a puller (figure 6-19) remove the brake drum. Disconnect from the lever 18 (see figure 6-18) manual brake shoe drive end of the cable, remove the cotter pin, press on the finger 21 and remove the lever. Disconnect the upper 2 and lower 7 tension springs with pliers.

6 - rear cable sheath;
7 - lower brake shoe tension spring;
8 - front brake shoe;

11 - oil deflector;
12 - brake shoe guide plates;
13 - rear parking brake cable;
14 - rear cable spring;
15 - rear cable tip;
16 - rear brake shoe;
17 - support stand of the shoe;
18 - manual brake pad drive lever;
19 - rubber cushions;
20 - brake shoe spacer bar;
21 - finger of the manual brake shoe drive lever.


Turn the cups of the support struts 17 and remove them together with the struts, springs and lower cups; remove pads 8 and 16 and spacer bar 20. Disconnect the pipe from wheel cylinder 1 and plug the inlets of the cylinder and pipe. Remove the wheel cylinder. When replacing brake shield 4, remove the half shaft as indicated in the "Rear Axle" section and disconnect rear cable 13 by unscrewing the two bolts securing it to brake shield 4.
