1. Windshield wipers and rear window wipers should be checked periodically for damage, loose parts, or wear on the wiper rubber.

2. A film may form on the brushes which affects their effectiveness, so the brushes should be washed regularly in a cleaning solution.

3. The operation of the brush mechanism may cause bolts, nuts and fasteners to become loose, so they should be checked and tightened if necessary at the same time as checking the brush rubbers.

4. If the rubber bands of the brushes (sometimes called inserts) have cracks, are worn out or have felted, they should be replaced with new ones.

5. Remove the blade from the wiper arm (see illustration), using a small screwdriver to lift the latch.

6. Once the brush is removed, you can take the rubber out of it.

7. Grasp the end of the wiper blade with one hand and the rubber band with the other. Pull one end of the rubber band out of the blade to remove it, then pull the entire rubber band out (see illustration).

8. Insert a small screwdriver into the slot and remove the blade from the wiper arm shaft (see illustration).

9. Using pliers, squeeze the clips on the end of the brush together, then slide the rubber band out and away from the brush.

10. Compare the new elastic band with the old one in length, design, etc.

11. Perform all disassembly operations in reverse order and insert the new brush into place. This will automatically lock it in the correct position.



12. Install the wiper blade back on the arm, wet the windshield or rear window and check that the blade is working properly.
