Checking the hydraulic fluid level in the automatic transmission (every 3000 miles or 3 months) (Chevrolet Lumina 1)

            0

1. It is necessary to constantly maintain the hydraulic fluid level in the automatic transmission. Low fluid levels can cause slippage or loss of torque, while overfilling can cause foaming and leakage of hydraulic fluid.

2. With the vehicle set to the parking brake, start the engine, then shift the gear selector through all ranges, ending in the Park position. The hydraulic fluid level should be checked with the vehicle level and the engine idling.

Note: If the vehicle has been driven for a long time at high speeds in hot weather, in urban driving conditions or with a trailer, the hydraulic fluid level readings may be incorrect. Wait until the liquid cools down (approximately 30 minutes).

3. When the transmission has warmed up to normal operating temperature, remove the dipstick from the filler tube. The dipstick is located at the rear of the engine compartment (see illustration).

4. Carefully touch the fluid at the end of the dipstick to determine whether it is cold or hot. Wipe off any fluid on the dipstick with a clean cloth and reinsert it into the tube until the plug snaps into place.

5. Remove the dipstick again and check the fluid level.

6. If the fluid feels cold to the touch, the level should be approximately 1/8-3/8 inch below the "ADD 1 PT" mark (see illustration). If the fluid is warm to the touch, the level should be close to the "ADD 1 PT" mark. If the fluid is hot, the level should be within the shaded area. If more liquid is required, pour it directly into the tube using a funnel. It takes approximately 1 pint (0.5 L) of hydraulic fluid to raise the level from the "ADD" mark to the top of the shaded area when the transmission is hot, so add fluid in small amounts and check the level frequently.

7. Along with the level, it is also necessary to check the condition of the hydraulic fluid. If the fluid on the dipstick has a dark reddish-brown tint or a "burnt" odor, it should be replaced. If you are unsure about the condition of your hydraulic fluid, purchase a new one and compare it with the one you used for color and smell.
