1. Axle shaft boots play an important role because they prevent dirt, water and foreign matter from entering the constant velocity joints, causing damage to the joints.

2. Check the covers for tears or cracks, and check if the clamps are loose (see illustration). If there is any evidence of cracking or grease leakage, the boots should be replaced as described in chapter 8.
