Exhaust System Check (every 3000 miles or 3 months) (Chevrolet Lumina 1)

            0

1. When the engine is cold (at least 3 hours after the trip) check the entire exhaust system from the engine to the end of the exhaust pipe. Ideally, the inspection should be carried out with the vehicle raised on a lift so that access is not restricted. If you don't have a lift, raise the car and secure it on stands.

2. Check the exhaust pipes and their connections for leaks, corrosion and damage. Make sure all brackets and holders are in good condition and tightened tightly (see illustration).

15.2. Check the rubber mounts of the exhaust system for cracks and damage

15.2. Check the rubber mounts of the exhaust system for cracks and damage

3. Check the underbody for holes, corrosion, open seams, etc. that could allow exhaust gases to escape into the atmosphere. Seal all body holes with silicone or body filler.

4. The causes of crackling and other noises during engine operation can also often be found in the exhaust system, especially on the mounts and suspension. Try to move the pipes, muffler and catalytic converter. If these parts contact the body or suspension components, secure the exhaust system with new fasteners.

5. Check the current condition of the engine by inspecting the inside of the exhaust pipe. Exhaust deposits here are indicators of engine tuning. If the pipe is black and sooty or covered with white deposits, the engine needs an adjustment, including a thorough inspection of the fuel system and its adjustment.
