1. The system works to "pull" fuel vapors from the gas tank and fuel system, pass them through an activated carbon filter and then burn them during normal engine operation.

2. The most common sign of a failed evaporative emission system is a strong smell of gasoline in the engine compartment. If you detect this smell, check the activated carbon filter located at the front of the engine. Also, check the filter and all hoses for damage or wear (see illustration).
