General description
1. A catalytic converter is a device for controlling the exhaust system, installed on it in order to reduce the concentration of harmful substances in the exhaust gases. A single-layer catalyst is used in combination with a three-component catalyst. The coating on the three-way catalyst contains platinum and rhodium, which helps reduce levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO).
Examination
2. The equipment for testing the catalyst is very expensive and complicated. If you suspect that the catalytic converter on your car is not working as it should, take it to a service center for diagnostics and repair.
3. Each time you lift the vehicle to service underbody components, check the catalytic converter for leaks, corrosion, or other damage. If damage is detected, replace the catalytic converter.
Replacement
4. Since the catalytic converter is part of the exhaust system, when replacing it, it is necessary to remove the inlet pipes (see chapter 4, section 14). Send the entire vehicle or its exhaust system to a repair shop.
