General description of power steering (Chevrolet Captiva 1)

The power steering system consists of three parts: the steering pump, the fluid reservoir, and the power rack and pinion steering gear. The steering pump is a vane pump that creates hydraulic pressure for the system and is driven by the engine. It draws from the steering fluid reservoir, which is connected to the steering gear. A relief valve inside the control flow valve limits the pressure of the pump. The power rack and pinion steering gear has a rotary control valve that directs hydraulic fluid from the steering pump to one side or the other of the rack plunger. The solid rack plunger is connected to the rack. The rack plunger converts hydraulic pressure into a linear force that moves the rack left or right. This force is then transmitted through the inner and outer tie rods to the steering knuckles, which turn the wheels.
