Signs of a malfunction - entertainment system

Important: Before using the symptom charts, you must complete the following steps.

1. Before using the symptom charts, perform a vehicle system diagnostic check to verify the following points are true.
  • There are no fault codes.
  • Controllers can communicate via a serial communication line.

2. View the system operation to become familiar with the system's functions.

Visual inspection / physical control

  • Inspect for aftermarket equipment that may affect the operation of the radio/audio system.
  • Inspect easily accessible and visible parts of the system for obvious signs of damage or conditions that could lead to malfunction.

Intermittent fault

Faulty electrical connections or wiring may cause intermittent faults. Refer to "Checking for Intermittent Failure and Poor Connector Contact" in Section 9A, "Body Wiring System".

Bad radio antenna

Using a test antenna

Important: To quickly check the functionality of the vehicle antenna, use a test mast antenna. Disconnect the antenna feeder connector from the radio input and connect the test antenna to it. Make sure that the base of the test antenna is connected to the vehicle chassis and do not touch the mast with your hands. Check the radio reception in an area free of electromagnetic interference. Tune in to several weak and strong radio stations in the MW/LW and VHF ranges. If the radio reception improves, then there is a problem with the vehicle antenna and/or feeder cable. If the radio reception does not improve, see the recommendations for troubleshooting the audio system.

Checking the antenna grounding

Important: To ensure measurement accuracy, be sure to check the zero of the multimeter before each resistance measurement.

1. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.

2. Disconnect the antenna feeder connector from the radio receiver.

3. Measure the resistance between the negative battery cable and the outer conductor of the coaxial cable at the connector.

4. The measured resistance value should be no more than 0.20 Ohm.

5. If the resistance is greater than 0.20 ohms, perform the following checks.
  • Reliability of the connection of the antenna base to the body ground.
  • Reliability of intermediate connections of coaxial cable and absence of corrosion in them.
  • Make sure there is no break or increased resistance between the negative battery cable and the car body.

Sound distortion - one or more speakers

Speakers - distortion

Important: The following table lists the causes of the fault in order from the most likely to the least likely. If the troubleshooting instructions recommend replacing a part, check for loose connections before replacing it. See "Checking for Intermittent Failure and Poor Connector Contact" in Section 9A, "Body Wiring System".

Sound volume is too high when the level is set to low

Step Operation Values Yes No
1
  1. Turn on the radio
  2. Adjust the volume to the lowest level at which sound can be heard.
Does the lowest level setting sound too loud?
-
Go to Step 2
The system is normal
2
Compare the volume with a similar car with exactly the same audio system.
Do cars sound the same?
-
The system is normal
Go to Step 5
3
Check the amplifier feedback signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
Has the cause been found and corrected?
-
Go to Step 9
Go to Step 4
4
  1. Turn off the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the audio amplifier feedback signal and ground circuits.
  3. Connect a jumper wire with a 3-amp fuse between the amplifier feedback circuit and ground.
  4. Turn on the ignition with the engine off.
Does the diagnostic tool show the presence of the audio amplifier?
-
Go to Step 8
Go to Step 5
5
Inspect the radio's wiring harness connector for loose connections. Is the cause found and corrected?
Is the renovation finished?
-
Go to Step 9
Go to Step 7
6
Inspect the wiring harness connector on the audio amplifier for poor connections.
Has the cause been found and corrected?
-
Go to Step 9
Go to Step 8
7
Replace the radio.
Is the replacement complete?
-
Go to Step 9
-
8
Replace the audio amplifier.
Is the replacement complete?
-
Go to Step 9
-
9
Operate the system to check if the problem has been corrected.
Has the cause been eliminated?
-
The system is normal
Go to Step 2

Steering wheel controls not working

Step Operation Values Yes No
1
Check the operation of all controls on the steering wheel.
Do all steering wheel controls work properly?
-
Proceed to "Checking for Intermittent Malfunction and Poor Connector Contact" in Section 9A, "Body Wiring System".
Go to Step 2
2
Check the radio signal circuit for a short to ground or an open.
Has the cause been found and corrected?
-
Go to Step 9
Go to Step 3
3
Caution! When performing maintenance work on parts of the SIR system (inflatable airbags), on the system wiring or near these parts, the SIR system must be disabled.
  1. Check the resistance of the control switches on the steering wheel.
  2. Press the control switches on the steering wheel one by one and compare the measured values with the specified ones.
Do the measured resistances correspond approximately to the specified values?
Volume increase: 1.2 kOhm; volume down: 1.56 kOhm; mode: 1.9 kOhm; temporary volume mute: 2.38 kOhm; frequency adjustment up 3.1 kOhm; frequency down tuning: 4.28 kOhm; setting type: 6.65 kOhm; preset stations: 13.6 kOhm
Go to Step 4
Go to Step 6
4
Check the steering wheel controls signal circuit for a short, high resistance, or open.
Has the cause been found and corrected?
-
Go to Step 9
Go to Step 5
5
Inspect the wiring harness connector on the radio for poor connections.
Has the cause been found and corrected?
-
Go to Step 9
Go to Step 8
6
Inspect the steering wheel radio control harness connector for poor connections.
Has the cause been found and corrected?
-
Go to Step 9
Go to Step 7
7
Replace the corresponding steering wheel radio control.
Is the replacement complete?
-
Go to Step 9
-
8
Replace the radio.
Is the replacement complete?
-
Go to Step 9
-
9
Operate the system to check if the problem has been corrected.
Has the cause been eliminated?
-
The system is normal
Go to Step 1
