Disassembling the underdrive clutch (C3) (Chevrolet Captiva 1)

Necessary equipment


  • J-28585 Snap Ring Remover
  • J-23327 Clutch Spring Compressor
  • J-25024-A Clutch Spring/Booster Piston Compressor
  • J-45186 Forward and Direct Drive Clutch Spring Compressor

1. Remove the flange, disc and plate of the underdrive clutch (C3).
  • Remove the retaining ring with a screwdriver.

  • Remove 1 flange, 4 discs and 4 plates.

Remove 1 flange, 4 discs and 4 plates.


Important: Care must be taken not to damage the front underdrive planetary sun gear.


2. Remove the underdrive clutch return spring assembly (C3).
  • Place J-25024-A in a vise with the clamp bolt down and pulled back.
  • Install J-45186 to the underdrive clutch assembly return spring (C3).
  • Place J-21420-2 from J-23327 on top of J-25024-A jack bolt.
  • Place the clutch housing with J-45186 on J-21420-2 and under the shoulders of J-25024-A.
  • Use the pressure bolt to compress the clutch spring so that the retaining ring can be removed.
  • Using J-28585 or snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring.
  • Remove the return spring assembly.

Remove the return spring assembly.


Caution: When working with compressed air, wear protective glasses to prevent eye injury.




3. Remove the underdrive clutch piston (C3).
  • Close any 2 holes of the 4 holes of the underdrive clutch lubrication channel (C3) with your fingers. Apply compressed air (4 kg/cm?) to any 1 hole and remove the C3 piston.

  • Remove the sealing rings from the C3 piston.
