Set the TDC according to the mark on the camshaft pulleys (when installed according to the marks on the crankshaft pulley, the piston of either the 1st or 4th cylinder may be in this position). After this, be sure to check that the marks on the toothed pulley of the crankshaft match (if the generator drive pulley is removed). If the marks do not match, then the valve timing is incorrect (piston of the 1st cylinder is not set to TDC). In this case, it is necessary to remove the camshaft drive belt and turn the crankshaft until the marks are aligned.
Helpful Hint: Since it is inconvenient to turn the crankshaft using the pulley mounting bolt, you can do this in the following ways:
- 1) engage any gear (preferably IV) and slowly roll the car until the marks align;
- 2) engage any gear and lift one of the front wheels, then turn the lifted wheel until the marks align.

When setting the piston of the 1st cylinder to TDC, the marks on the camshaft pulleys must be located opposite each other,..

...and the mark on the crankshaft pulley should coincide with the slot on the rear cover of the timing drive.
1. Remove the timing belt covers (see "Replacing the timing belt and its tension roller").

2. Turn the engine crankshaft using the crankshaft pulley mounting bolt until the mark on the crankshaft pulley aligns with the cutout on the rear cover of the timing drive.
3. Check the alignment of the marks on the camshaft pulleys.
