Removal procedure
Attention! To prevent personal injury, do not remove the expansion tank cap on a hot engine and radiator as the heat pressurizes the system. Hot liquid and steam can escape under high pressure.
1. Drain the coolant from the engine cooling system to a level below the thermostat housing. follow the paragraph «Draining and recharging the cooling system» in this section.
2. Remove the timing belt. See Section 1B, "Engine mechanical system - 2.0 Diesel".
3. Remove the timing belt tensioner.
4. Remove the fuel injection pump sprocket.
5. Remove the timing belt rear cover.
6. Remove water pump with gasket.
Inspection and cleaning procedure
1. Check the coolant pump housing for damage and leakage.
2. Check the coolant pump bearing for play and excessive noise.
3. Check the water pump pulley for excessive wear. If the water pump is defective, replace the entire water pump.
4. Clean the mating surfaces of the coolant pump and cylinder block.
Installation procedure
1. Install the water pump with a new gasket.
Tighten
Tighten the water pump pinch bolts to 11 Nm (97.4 lb-in).
2. Install the timing belt tensioner.
3. Install the fuel injection pump sprocket.
4. Install the timing belt rear cover.
Tighten
Tighten the timing belt tensioner bolt to 52 Nm (38.4 lb-ft).
Tighten the fuel injection pump sprocket nut to 70 Nm (51.6 lb-ft).
Tighten the timing belt rear cover bolts to 11 Nm (97.4 lb-in).
