Emissions related fault codes

Actions Taken When a DTC Sets - Type A

  • The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) comes on immediately after a malfunction occurs.
  • The controller records the operating conditions at the time a fault is detected. This information is stored in the status record buffer and fault logs.
  • An archive of diagnostic trouble codes is saved.

Actions to Take When a DTC Sets - Type B (or E)

  • The fault indicator warning light comes on after 2 (or 3) confirmed driving cycles.
  • The controller records the operating conditions at the time a fault is detected. This information is stored in the status record buffer and fault logs.
  • An archive of diagnostic trouble codes is saved.

Conditions for clearing the fault code / turning off the fault indication - type A or type B (or E)

  • The malfunction indicator lamp turns off after four consecutive driving cycles in which the diagnostics did not detect a malfunction.
  • The diagnostic trouble code history is cleared after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles without a fault.
  • The diagnostic trouble code can be cleared using a scan tool.

Non-Emissions Related Fault Codes

Actions taken when a fault code is set - type Cnl

  • The malfunction indicator lamp does not light.
  • The controller records the operating conditions at the time a fault is detected. This information is stored in the status record buffer and fault logs.

Conditions for clearing fault codes - type Cnl

  • The diagnostic trouble code history is cleared after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles without a fault.
  • The diagnostic trouble code can be cleared using a scan tool.

Conditions for clearing fault codes - type Z

This DTC is present in the controller software but is disabled or turned off. In this case, the diagnostic test will not be performed, diagnostic trouble codes will not be stored, and the malfunction indicator lamp will not illuminate.

Clearing diagnostic codes

Important: Do not clear diagnostic trouble codes if this operation has not received a service authorization message from the diagnostic procedure. After clearing the diagnostic trouble codes, the status record and fault log data that can help you diagnose intermittent failures will also be erased from memory. If the fault that led to the appearance of the diagnostic fault code to be stored in memory has been eliminated, the Operating diagnostics will start counting down the "warm-up" cycles, during which no further faults are detected, and the diagnostic fault code will be automatically cleared from the memory of the ECM controller. To clear diagnostic trouble codes, you must use a diagnostic scanning device.

Note: To avoid damage to the ECM, when connecting or disconnecting the ECM, (for example, the wires of the battery, the connecting connector of the ECM controller, the fuse of the ECM controller, jumpers, etc.) the key must be in the OFF position. When the ECM controller sets a diagnostic fault code, the fault indicator light turns on only for types A, B, and E, but the diagnostic fault codes are stored in the ECM controller's memory for all types of codes. The diagnostic fault code remains in the memory of the ECM controller until it is erased by the diagnostic device. After the repair is complete, the diagnostic trouble codes should be erased. Some diagnostic tables allow you to clear codes before using the tables. This allows the ECM controller to set diagnostic trouble codes by working out the table, which helps to quickly detect the cause of the problem.

Diagnostic Trouble Codes

Additional DTC information is stored in the symptom byte as a 2-digit hexadecimal number. A symptom byte value of zero (00) indicates that no additional information is available beyond that contained in the DTC description. The symptom byte may not be displayed on the scan tool.
