List of data displayed by the scan tool
The scan tool's engine data list contains all engine-related data available on the scan tool. The list is organized alphabetically. Each parameter may appear in any one of the data lists, in some cases more than once, or may appear in more than one data list if it pertains to a group of certain related parameters.
Use the data list displayed by the scan tool only after the following conditions are met:
- The diagnostic system check is complete.
- There are no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
- Built-in diagnostic systems are functioning correctly.
The values obtained by the scan tool on a healthy engine can be used to compare with the data of the engine being diagnosed. The list of engine data displayed by the scan tool shows the values that would be obtained for a normally operating engine.
Important: Do not use a scan tool that displays erroneous data. A faulty scan tool should be reported to the manufacturer. Using a faulty scan tool may result in diagnostic errors and unnecessary replacement of parts and components.
Only the data listed below is included in this service information for diagnostic purposes. If all values are within the typical value ranges listed below, refer to the section "Symptoms. Engine controls used in diagnostics".
The column labeled "Data List" indicates where the parameter is located on the scan tool. The exact location of the data lists on the scan tool can be determined by consulting the scan tool's instruction manual. Each of the terms included in the lists is listed below:
- All: This parameter is present in all data lists below.
- Eng: Engine data
- Ign: Ignition data

Transmission Gear Selector Signal (Gearbox selector signal). This parameter indicates the position of the transmission selector lever as transmitted via the serial data circuit from the transmission control module (TCM).
Vehicle Security Status (Status of the car security system). This parameter indicates the status of the vehicle's alarm system.
Vehicle speed (Car speed). This parameter indicates the vehicle speed calculated by the transmission control module (TCM) using information received from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS).
Volumetric Efficiency (Volumetric efficiency). This parameter indicates the volumetric efficiency of the engine as calculated by the controller.

Camshaft Actuator (Camshaft timing control drive)
Special Functions / Engine Output Controls / CMP Actuator System (Special functions / engine diagnostic functions / variable valve timing drive system)
This function controls the variable valve timing actuator of the selected camshaft. The normal commanded state is NONE. The system will increase or decrease the angle of the selected camshaft in 5 degree increments up to 40 degrees crankshaft rotation. The scan tool initiates the test when the following conditions are met:
The system remains in a given state until it is cleared by a scanning device.
Camshaft Actuator Solenoid (Camshaft timing control actuator valve)
Special Functions / Engine Output Controls / CMP Actuator System (Special functions / engine diagnostic functions / variable valve timing drive system)
This function controls the camshaft variable valve timing actuator valve for the selected camshaft. The normal commanded state is NONE. When commanded on/off, the ECM turns the camshaft variable valve timing actuator on or off. The scan tool initiates the test when the following conditions are met:
The system remains in a given state until it is cleared by a scanning device.
Cylinder Power Balance (Cylinder power balance)
Special Functions / Fuel System (Special functions / fuel system)
Important: When using this feature, the Misfire Current and Misfire History settings may not change.
This function turns off the selected fuel injector. The normal specified state is NONE. The scan tool initiates the test when the following conditions are met:
If a fuel injector has been disabled for 30 seconds, control of that fuel injector cannot be resumed for 60 seconds.
Engine Speed Control (Engine speed control)
Special Functions / TAC System (Special functions / TAC system)
This function controls the idle speed increase in increments of 25, 100, and 500 RPM, starting at the base speed and up to 1400 RPM. The scan tool initiates the test when the following conditions are met:
The engine will remain in the set state until it is cleared by the scan tool.
SUPB adsorber purge valve
Special Functions / Engine Output Controls / EVAP System (Special functions / engine diagnostic functions / Emission control system)
Important: Using this diagnostic feature may not change the EVAP Purge Solenoid Command parameter.
This function controls the EVAP purge valve. The normal commanded state is NONE. The system will increase or decrease purge by changing the purge valve duty cycle in 10 percent increments from 0-100 percent. The system will remain in the commanded state until cleared by a scan tool or the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor reading is greater than -24 mmHg. (-12 inches of water.).
EVAP Purge/Seal (Purging/sealing of the SUPB)
Special Functions / Engine Output Controls / EVAP System (Special functions / engine diagnostic functions / Emission control system)
Important: When using this diagnostic feature, the EVAP Purge Solenoid Command and EVAP Vent Solenoid Command parameters may not change.
This feature turns on both the EVAP purge valve and the EVAP vent valve to seal the EVAP. When turned on, the purge valve is commanded "0 percent" and the vent valve is commanded "on, no vent". The normal commanded state for both valves is NONE. Both valves remain in this commanded state until cleared by a scan tool or the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor reading is greater than -24 mmHg. (-12 inches of water.).
EVAP Test (EVAP Test)
Service Bay Test (Testing at a service station)
This function enables the Service Bay Test mode to check the serviceability of the EMS system. The scan tool initiates the test when the following conditions are met:
EVAP Vent Solenoid (Ventilation valve SUPB)
Special Functions / Engine Output Controls / EVAP System (Special functions / engine diagnostic functions / Emission control system)
Important: Using this diagnostic feature may not change the EVAP Vent Solenoid Command parameter.
This function controls the vent valve of the PSU. The normal set state is NONE. When the "On" command is given, the vent valve switches to the "No Vent" mode. The system remains in the set state until one of the following conditions is met:
fuel injector balance
Special Functions / Fuel System (Special functions / fuel system)
This function turns on the fuel injector to check for proper flow through the fuel injector. The ECM will energize the selected fuel injector when the following conditions are met:
Fuel/pulse to a selected fuel injector can only be delivered once per ignition cycle.
Fuel pump; Gasoline pump; Electric fuel pump
Special Functions / Engine Output Controls (Special functions / engine diagnostic functions)
This function monitors the fuel pump relay. The normal set state is NONE. The scan tool initiates the test when the following conditions are met:
When commanded "on/off", the ECM turns the fuel pump relay on/off. If the engine is running and the fuel pump relay is commanded "off", the engine will stall. The system remains in this commanded state for approximately 2 seconds or until cleared by a scan tool or the ECM detects vehicle movement.
Fuel Trim Reset (Resetting fuel trim)
Special Functions / Fuel System (Special functions / fuel system)

This feature allows the ECM to relearn the throttle position and idle speed parameters when the following conditions are met.
IMRC Solenoid (IMRC valve)
Special Functions / Engine Output Controls (Special functions / engine diagnostic functions)
This function monitors the Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) valve. The normal commanded state is NONE. When commanded on/off, the ECM turns the IMRC valve on or off. The scan tool initiates the test when the following conditions are met:
The system remains in a given state until it is cleared by a scanning device.
