In very cold weather, 0°F (-18°C) or colder, a coolant heater can help. You'll get better engine starts and save more fuel while warming up the engine. Typically, the coolant heater should be turned on at least four hours before starting the engine.

How to use a heater

1. Turn off the engine.

2. Open the hood and unfold the electrical cord.

3. Plug it into a regular, grounded, 110-volt AC power source.

4. Before starting the engine, make sure you disconnect and stow the cord so that it does not come into contact with moving parts of the engine. If you do not do this, the cord may be damaged.

How long should you keep the heater on?

The answer depends on the outside temperature, the type of oil you use, and a few other things.

Rather than write everything down here, we ask that you contact the General Motors representative in the area where you operate your vehicle. The representative can give you the best advice for that area.
