Diagnostics of exhaust system faults (Chevrolet Captiva 1)

Elimination
Exhaust gas leak
Leaks at pipe connections.
Tightening nuts and bolts to the specified torque.
Damaged or improperly installed catalytic converter O-rings/gaskets.
Replace the O-ring/gasket if necessary.
Burnt or rusted exhaust pipe or muffler.
Replace the component if necessary.
Exhaust noises
Leaks in the manifold or pipe connections.
Tighten the bolts/nuts in the gaps on the connections to the specified torque. Replace the gasket if necessary.
Burnt or porous exhaust pipe or muffler.
If necessary, replace the pipe/muffler assembly.
The exhaust manifold is cracked or broken.
Replace the manifold.
Leak between manifold and cylinder head.
Tighten the manifold mounting studs to the cylinder head to the specified torque.
Loss of engine power, misfires, fluctuations in engine speed, high fuel consumption, engine stalling or difficult starting
Clogged pre-catalytic converter (the cause may be a serious malfunction in the engine).
Replace the pre-catalytic converter.
Crumpled pipeline.
Replace the pipeline.
Internal rattling in the muffler
Broken pipes and/or partitions in the muffler.
Replace the muffler.
The pre-catalytic converter failed and parts of it fell into the muffler.
Replace the pre-catalytic converter assembly and the damaged muffler.
Exhaust system rattle or knock
Damaged, worn, missing or incorrectly installed rubber mounting hangers.
Check and replace if necessary.
Damaged mounting hooks or hangers.
Perform maintenance/replace hangers or hooks as necessary.
Incorrect alignment.
Tighten all clamps according to the tightening sequence and specified torque.
Damaged or incorrect exhaust system components.
Replace damaged or non-compliant exhaust system components.
