Checking generator systems (Chevrolet Captiva 1)

            0

During normal operation, the generator indicator light comes on when the ignition is in the RUN position and goes out when the engine is started. If the light is not working properly or the battery is overcharged or discharged, use the following procedure to diagnose the charging system. Remember that a discharged battery can be caused by instruments left on overnight, faulty lamp switches, trunk lid or glove box.

Perform a generator test as follows:

1. Inspect the belt and wiring.

2. With the ignition in the on position and the engine stopped, the charge indicator lamp should be on. Otherwise, it is necessary to disconnect the wiring harness on the generator and ground the "L" terminal in this harness using a 5-amp jumper wire.
  • If the lamp is on, replace the generator. Follow step "Generator" Car maintenance in this section.
  • If the lamp does not light, check for an open circuit between the ignition switch and the wiring harness connector. The test lamp may be burned out.

3. With the ignition on and the engine running at moderate speed, the charge indicator lamp should be off. Otherwise, you must disconnect the wiring harness on the generator.
  • If the lamp goes out, replace the generator. Follow step "Generator" Car maintenance in this section.
  • If the lamp remains on, check for a short to ground between the connector and the test lamp.

Important: Always check the generator output before assuming that the generator is faulty due to a short to ground at the "L" terminal. Follow step "Generator" in the Unit Repair section.
