Note: The automatic transmission cannot be removed while the engine is in the vehicle. The drive axle in a block with an automatic transmission can be separated from the engine only after the entire power unit, consisting of the engine, automatic transmission and subframe, has been removed from the car. This is a dangerous and difficult procedure that requires a lift. Therefore, it is advisable for you to contact a workshop equipped to perform this work.
Removal
1. Remove the power unit with the subframe from the vehicle (see chapter 2, part 2.3, section 5).
2. Remove the torque converter cover.
3. Mark the relative positions of the torque converter and flywheel with white paint to ensure installation in the same position.
4. Loosen the bolts securing the torque converter to the flywheel. Rotate the crankshaft pulley bolt so that all torque converter mounting bolts are accessible.
5. Loosen the bolts securing the gearbox to the engine.
6. Remove the gearbox from the bolts and nuts.
7. Move the transmission rearward to clear the engine dowel pins, ensuring that the torque converter is disengaged from the flywheel. Secure the torque converter to the transmission so that it does not fall out during removal.
8. Remove the gearbox from the engine.
Installation
9. Before installation, make sure that the torque converter bushing is tightly connected to the pump. Lubricate the torque converter hub with multi-purpose grease.
10. Install the gearbox back in its original place. Try to keep the transmission in a horizontal position so that the torque converter does not slip off it.
11. Rotate the torque converter until the bolt holes align with the holes on the flywheel. A mark made with white paint on the torque converter will help to correctly align the flywheel relative to it (see point 3).
12. Move the transmission forward until the dowel pins are in place in the torque converter.
13. Insert the transmission-to-engine mounting bolts and tighten them.
14. Insert the torque converter mounting bolts to the flywheel. Tighten these bolts to the torque specified at the beginning of this chapter.
15. Reinstall the torque converter cover.
16. After the gearbox and subframe are installed (see chapter 2, part 2.3, section 5), connect the fluid cooling pipes and adjust the gear shifter connection (see section 5).
17. Fill the gearbox with fluid (see chapter 1), drive the car and check for fluid leaks.
