ACEA Classification of Motor Oil
The Committee of European Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA) classifies motor oil according to its quality.
Classes are designated by letters and numbers, for example: A3.
- A3 - high-quality all-season oils for use in gasoline engines (stable viscosity);
- B3 - high-quality all-season oils for use in diesel engines (stable viscosity);
- B4 - high-quality all-season oils for use in diesel engines with direct injection (stable viscosity);
API Motor Oil Classification
The American Petroleum Institute classifies oil according to a set of service properties.
Each category is designated by two letters, the first of which indicates the engine type S (Service) - petrol, C (Commercial) - diesel.
The second letter indicates the oil quality level. The further down the alphabet the letter designation is, the higher the oil quality.
For example:
- API SH oil for gasoline engines.
- API CD diesel engine oil.
- It is recommended to use API SM grade oil or better.
The viscosity of the oil is selected depending on the ambient temperature.
Use of oil for gasoline engines depending on the air temperature.
