Important: Remove the steering column only in the following cases:
- The steering column needs to be replaced.
- The steering system and ignition switch housing need to be replaced.
- To perform any operation it is necessary to dismantle the steering column.
Note: The steering column is very susceptible to damage after removal from the vehicle. Dropping the column on its end or striking the end of the steering shaft can destroy the steering shaft or weaken the plastic inserts that provide rigidity to the column. Leaning on the column can cause it to bend or deform. Any of these damages can compromise the column's crush-resistant design. If the steering wheel must be removed, use only the specified steering wheel puller.

Removal procedure
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait 1 minute for the airbag to deactivate.
2. Remove the steering wheel. See "Steering column cover" in this section.
3. Remove the turn signal/headlight switch and lever. See "Turn signal/headlight switch and lever" in this section.
4. Remove the wiper/cruise control lever and switch. See "Windshield wiper/cruise control lever and switch" in this section.
5. Remove the clock spring. See section 8B, "Air Bags".
6. Remove the driver's knee bolster. See section 9G, "Interior Trim".

7. Remove the ignition switch. See "Ignition switch" in this section.
8. Remove the keyhole lamp. See "Keyhole Lamp" in this section.
9. Remove the immobilizer controller if installed. See section 9T2, "Immobilizing Anti-Theft System".
10. Remove the lock cylinder. See "Lock cylinder" in this section.
11. Remove the SSPS controller. See section 6C, "Power Steering".
12. Remove the steering shaft universal joint pinch bolt and the steering column assembly lower bracket bolt.
13. Remove the steering angle sensor. See "Steering Wheel Angle Sensor" in this section.

14. Remove the steering column assembly lower bracket bolts.

15. Remove the steering column assembly upper bracket bolts.
16. Remove the steering column assembly from the vehicle.

Installation procedure
Important: To install the steering column correctly, make sure the steering wheel spokes are positioned diagonally in the middle and pointing downwards, and the front wheels are positioned in a straight-ahead position.
1. Install the steering angle sensor. See "Steering Wheel Angle Sensor" in this section.
2. Carefully guide the steering shaft into the universal joint.
Important: Support the steering column assembly until the mounting bolts are tightened. Do not leave the steering column assembly hanging unsupported.

3. Insert the tie bolt into the unthreaded hole in the flange.
Tighten
Tighten the steering column shaft mounting bolt in the universal joint clamp to a torque of 34 N·m (25 ft·lbs).
4. Install the lower bracket bolt and upper steering column assembly bracket bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the steering column assembly lower bracket bolt to 25 N·m (18 ft·lbs).
Tighten the steering column assembly upper bracket bolts to 22 N·m (16 ft·lbs).

5. Install the SSPS controller. See section 6C, "Power Steering".
6. Install the lock cylinder. See "Lock cylinder" in this section.
7. Install the immobilizer controller, if equipped. See section 9T2, "Immobilizing Anti-Theft System".
8. Install the keyhole lamp. See "Keyhole Lamp" in this section.
9. Install the ignition switch. See "Ignition switch" in this section.
10. Install the driver's knee bolster. See section 9G, "Interior Trim".
11. Install the clock spring. See section 8B, "Air Bags".

12. Install the wiper/cruise control lever and switch. See "Windshield wiper/cruise control lever and switch" in this section.
13. Install the turn signal/headlight switch and lever. See "Turn signal/headlight switch and lever" in this section.
14. Install the steering wheel. See "Steering wheel" in this section.
15. Connect the negative battery cable.
