Removal and installation the transfer case (Chevrolet Tahoe 2)

NVG 236/246 NP8 Box, Early Models



1. Raise the vehicle.

2. Remove the transfer case guard, if installed.

2. Remove the transfer case guard, if installed.


3. Remove the front propeller shaft.

4. Remove the rear propeller shaft.

5. Disconnect the transfer case shift motor wiring connector.

5. Disconnect the transfer case shift motor wiring connector.


6. Remove the transfer case ventilation hose.

6. Remove the transfer case ventilation hose.


7. Remove the wire bundle from the transfer case.



7. Remove the wire bundle from the transfer case.


8. Place a jack under the transfer case and secure the case to the jack.

9. Loosen the transfer case mounting nuts. Tightening torque 50 Nm.

9. Loosen the transfer case mounting nuts. Tightening torque 50 Nm.


10. Separate the transfer case from the automatic transmission by moving it backwards without distorting it.

Caution: When removing the transfer case, do not remove the automatic transmission support or transfer case adapter.


11. Turn the transfer case so that it is perpendicular to the automatic transmission.

12. Lower the transfer case.

13. Installation in reverse order.

Box BW4482-NR4/4481-NR3 and NVG 236/246 NP8, late models



1. Raise the vehicle. Remove the transfer case guard.

2. Drain the oil from the box.

3. Remove the front propeller shaft.

4. Remove the rear propeller shaft.



5. (NVG 236/246 NP8) Disconnect the transfer case ventilation hose (2) from the fitting (1).

5. (NVG 236/246 NP8) Disconnect the transfer case ventilation hose (2) from the fitting (1).


6. Place the hose aside.

7. Release the box wire bundle from the support clips.

8. (NVG 236/246 NP8) Disconnect the wiring harness retainer (4) from the fuel pipe bracket.

(All boxes) Remove the remaining harness clips from the wiring harness.

9. Disconnect the connector (2) of the transfer case mode shift motor wiring.

10. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor connector (1).

11. (NVG 236/246 NP8) Disconnect the remaining speed sensor connectors.

12. Place the wires aside.

13. Place a jack under the automatic transmission and transfer case, secure the box to the jack.

Only BW4482-NR4/4481-NR3



14. Loosen the automatic transmission support mounting nuts. Tightening torque 40 Nm.

15. Loosen the bolts securing the automatic transmission support crossmember. Tightening torque 70 Nm.

16. Remove the cross member.

17. Loosen the automatic transmission support mounting bolts. Tightening torque 50 Nm.

17. Loosen the automatic transmission support mounting bolts. Tightening torque 50 Nm.


18. Remove the automatic transmission support.

All boxes



19. Loosen the transfer case mounting nuts. Tightening torque 47 Nm.

19. Loosen the transfer case mounting nuts. Tightening torque 47 Nm.


20. Remove the fuel pipe support bracket.

21. Separate the transfer case from the automatic transmission by moving it backwards without distorting it.

22. Turn the transfer case so that it is perpendicular to the automatic transmission.

23. Lower the transfer case.

24. Installation is carried out in reverse order.
