The electrical network of the car is single-wire, the second conductor is the "ground" - the car body and the power unit. The negative terminals of sources and consumers of electrical energy are connected to the "ground".
The power sources are the battery and the generator.
The battery ensures the operation of the starter when starting the engine, as well as the operation of the car's security system when parked, and the operation of the electric door lock drive (central lock) and other electrical equipment when the engine is not running. While the engine is running, the equipment is supplied with electricity from the generator. Part of the energy generated by the generator is used to recharge the battery.
The power supply voltage for most electrical consumers is supplied through the ignition switch (lock). The electrical equipment is switched on both manually by switches and toggles on the instrument panel and steering column, and automatically by the electrical equipment control unit.
All electrical circuits of the car (except for the starter power circuit) are protected by fuses and fusible links installed in fuse and relay boxes located in the engine compartment and under the instrument panel.
Power supply circuits of powerful electricity consumers are connected using relays, which can be either of the conventional type or built into control units.
For ease of installation and troubleshooting, the vehicle's electrical wiring has multi-colored insulation. Depending on the current passing through, the wires have different cross-sectional areas. The wires are collected into bundles. The connections of the wire harnesses to each other and to the electrical equipment are made using quick-release connectors.
The electrical equipment of a car is a complex system consisting of various systems with separate control units. To synchronize and control the operation of the systems, the control units exchange data, which is transmitted digitally via the CAN bus. This reduces the number of wires and increases the data transfer rate. The CAN bus uses a communication cable, which is a twisted pair of wires, to connect the control unit.
