Checking the technical condition of the exhaust system (Chevrolet Trailblazer 1)

            0

1. Without warming up the engine (or at least three hours after it was turned off), inspect the exhaust system from the connection of the inlet pipe to the exhaust manifold to the end of the rear exhaust pipe. Precautions should be taken as the catalytic converter may remain hot even three hours after the engine has been stopped. To provide access necessary for inspection, raise the vehicle with a lift. If necessary, you can lift it with a jack and install vertical supports.

2. Inspect the system pipes and fittings for signs of exhaust gas leaks, excessive corrosion, or other damage. Make sure that the system hangers and their brackets are suitable and securely fastened (see illustrations).

20.2a. Inspect the muffler (A) and all suspensions (B) of the system for signs of damage

20.2b Inspect the system flange connections for signs of exhaust gas leakage

3. Make sure that the underbody surface is intact and in satisfactory condition, as this prevents exhaust gases from entering the vehicle interior. Seal areas where exhaust gases may penetrate through the underbody with automotive putty or silicone sealant.

4. Exhaust system components make a knocking noise when their fasteners or connectors become loose, especially the suspensions and brackets of the system. By moving components such as pipes, catalytic converter and mufflers, determine the maximum amplitude of their oscillation on the system hangers. If the elements come into contact with the vehicle body, replace the corresponding suspensions.
