The knock sensor is located in the cylinder block behind the oil filter. The sensor performs a key function in the Electronic Spark Control (ESC) system. It responds to excessive vibration in the engine. The sensor produces an output signal in the form of a voltage that increases as the detonation intensifies. The signal from the sensor is sent to the PCM unit, and upon command from the unit, the ignition is delayed by angles of up to 10° to compensate for detonation. A detailed description of the ESC system is presented in section 6 this chapter.
