Removal procedure
1. Turn the steering wheel until it is horizontal and the spokes point downwards. This is the straight-ahead position of the steering wheels. Make a mark on the steering shaft housing opposite the groove on the intermediate shaft. This mark will be used for proper alignment during installation.
2. Remove the left front wheel. See section 2E, "Tires and Wheels".
3. Remove the lower pinch bolt from the universal joint on the steering gear.

4. Remove the upper tie rod from the universal joint on the intermediate shaft.
5. Remove the intermediate shaft and front panel seal.

Installation procedure
1. Install the intermediate shaft and front panel seal on the vehicle.
Important: When connecting the upper universal joint, the steering wheel must be in the straight-ahead position with the spokes facing down.
2. Attach the intermediate shaft universal joint to the steering column.
3. Install the tie rod bolts into the universal joint on the intermediate shaft and tighten the bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the intermediate shaft tie bolts to 34 Nm (25 ft·lbs).

Important: When securing the lower universal joint, the marks on the intermediate shaft and the pivot shaft must match.
4. Attach the intermediate shaft to the steering gear pivot shaft.
Important: When installing the lower intermediate shaft pinch bolt, make sure the bolt goes through the universal joint on the notched side of the stub shaft. If you have difficulty installing the universal joint all the way down onto the stub shaft, gently rock the steering wheel while pushing the universal joint down.
5. Install the bolt into the lower universal joint on the intermediate shaft and tighten the bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the intermediate shaft clamping bolt to 34 Nm (25 ft·lbs).
