Transfer case oil (Chevrolet Tahoe 2)

Depending on the configuration and year of manufacture, the following transfer boxes are installed on vehicles:

Models produced before 2007:
  • borg Warner (BW) model 4481 NR3 (single stage), providing torque distribution between the front and rear axles in a ratio of 40:60 (constant).
  • borg Warner (BW) model 4482 NR4 (two-stage), providing torque distribution between the front and rear axles in a ratio of 40:60 (constant).
  • new Venture Gear model NVG 236/246 RPO NP8 (transfer case with automatic torque distribution system).

Models since 2007:
  • borg Warner (BW) model 4485 NR3 (single stage), providing torque distribution between the front and rear axles in a ratio of 40:60 (constant).
  • new Venture Gear model NVG 246 RPO NP8 (transfer case with automatic torque distribution system).

Checking the oil level



Note: There is no need to check the oil level in the transfer case regularly. Checking is carried out according to the frequency schedule.


1. Place the vehicle on a flat, horizontal surface.

2. Clean the area around the drain and filler plugs.

3. Unscrew the filler plug (B). Make sure that the oil level in the transfer case is under the edge of the filler plug hole.

4. Make sure there is no visible contamination of the oil. If the oil is contaminated, it must be drained and replaced with new oil. Make sure the oil has the appropriate viscosity.



5. Install and tighten the filler plug. The tightening torque of the plug is 20 Nm.

Oil change



1. Loosen the drain plug (A) and drain the oil. Remove the gasket.

NVG 236/246 NP8


2. Install a new gasket and tighten the plug. Tightening torque 20 Nm.

3. Unscrew the filler plug (B).



4. Remove the gasket.

5. Fill with fresh oil.

Transfer case oil type:
  • BW4481 NR3/4482 NR4 according to GM specification - DEXRON® III, 12346143 (or equivalent 10952622)
  • BW4485NR3 according to GM specification - 88861800 (USA), 88861801 (Canada)
  • NVG 236/246 NP8 to GM specification - Auto-II, 12378508 (or equivalent 10953626)

Filling volume:
  • BW4481 NR3 - 1.5 l
  • BW4482 NR4 - 1.4 l
  • BW4485NR3 — 1.4 l
  • NVG 236/246 NP8 - 1.9 l

6. Check the oil level and top up if necessary.

Note: Do not overfill above the specified level.


7. Screw in the filler plug. Tightening torque 20 Nm.
