Engine start inhibit switch (Chevrolet Tahoe 2)

Please note: When installing the old switch, a special guide tool will be required.


Removal



1. Apply the parking brake.

2. Move the automatic transmission selector to neutral position.

3. Remove the front propeller shaft.

4. Raise the vehicle and place safety stands under the frame.

5. Disconnect the start inhibit switch connector (2).

6. Loosen the manual control shaft lever mounting nut.

7. Remove the lever from the shaft.

8. Unscrew the switch mounting bolts.

9. Remove the switch. If the switch does not come off the shaft, file the outer end of the shaft to remove burrs.

Installation



1. Install the switch on the shaft, aligning the flats on the switch and shaft.



2. Slide the switch onto the shaft until the switch bracket touches the bosses on the automatic transmission housing.

Please note: The new switch comes with a guide bracket, so you do not need to use a special guide tool.

3. Tighten the switch mounting bolts by hand.

4. Install the guide tool on the switch, aligning the protrusions of the guide tool with the slots in the shaft.

5. Rotate the tool until the upper projection of the tool aligns with the groove on the switch. Tighten the mounting bolts. Tightening torque 25 N·m.

6. Remove the guide tool or bracket (from the new switch).

7. Install the manual control shaft lever. Tighten the fastening nut. Tightening torque 25 N·m.

8. Connect the switch connector.

9. Install the front propeller shaft.

10. Lower the vehicle.

11. Check the operation of the switch: the engine should only start when the selector is in the "P" or "N" positions. Adjust the switch position if necessary.

Adjustment



1. Set the automatic transmission selector to position "N".

2. Place an assistant in the driver's seat, raise the vehicle and place safety stands under the frame.

3. Loosen the switch mounting bolts.



4. Rotate the switch while the assistant tries to start the engine.

5. After successful start, turn off the engine.

6. Tighten the switch mounting bolts. Tightening torque 25 N·m.

7. Lower the vehicle.

8. Check the operation of the switch.

9. If the engine continues to start in selector positions other than "P" and "N", replace the switch.
