Camshaft gears (Chevrolet Captiva 1)

Removal procedure



1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Remove the screw from the decorative engine cover.

3. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs.

4. Disconnect the breather hose and the positive crankcase ventilation hose from the cylinder head cover.

5. Remove the cylinder head cover. See "Cylinder head cover" in this section.

6. Remove the timing belt. Follow step "Gas distribution mechanism drive belt" in this section.

Note: Use extreme care to avoid scratching, denting or damaging the camshafts.


7. While holding the intake camshaft firmly, remove the intake camshaft gear bolt.

8. Remove the intake camshaft gear.



9. While holding the exhaust camshaft firmly, remove the exhaust camshaft gear bolt.

10. Remove the exhaust camshaft gear.

11. Remove the camshaft position (CMP) sensor.

Installation procedure



1. Install the camshaft position sensor (CMP).

Tighten

Tighten the camshaft position sensor bolt to 8 Nm (71 lbs.in).

Note: Use extreme care to avoid scratching, denting or damaging the camshafts.


2. Install the intake camshaft gear.

3. While holding the intake camshaft firmly, install the new intake camshaft gear bolt.

Tighten

Tighten the intake camshaft gear bolt to 50 Nm (37 ft·lbs) plus 60° and 15° using the KM-470-B angular torque indicator.

4. Install the exhaust camshaft gear.

5. While holding the exhaust camshaft firmly, install a new exhaust camshaft gear bolt.



Tighten

Tighten the exhaust camshaft gear bolt to 50 Nm (37 ft·lbs) plus 60° and 15° using the KM-470-B angular torque indicator.

6. Install the timing belt. Follow step "Gas distribution mechanism drive belt" in this section.

7. Apply a small amount of sealant to the corners of the front camshaft head and where the top of the rear cylinder head cover attaches to the cylinder head gasket.

8. Install the cylinder head cover. See "Cylinder head cover" in this section.

Tighten

Tighten the cylinder head cover bolts to 8 Nm (71 lbs.in).

9. Connect the breather and positive crankcase ventilation hose to the cylinder head cover.

10. Connect the spark plug wires to the spark plugs.

11. Install the decorative engine cover.



Tighten

Tighten the engine decorative cover bolts and nuts to 8 Nm (71 lbs.in).

12. Connect the negative battery cable.
