Replacing the cylinder head cover gasket (Chevrolet Cruze J300)

If oil leakage from under the cylinder head cover cannot be eliminated by tightening the cover mounting bolts, replace its gasket. Oil leakage into the spark plug wells usually cannot be eliminated by tightening the cover mounting bolts. In this case, the gasket must also be replaced.

You will need: a 10 mm wrench and pliers.

1. Remove the decorative engine cover (see "Removal and installation the decorative engine cover").

2. Disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery.

3. Remove the high-voltage wires.

4. Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the phase sensor terminals (see "Checking and replacing engine management system sensors").

8. Using a screwdriver, pry off the sealing rings of the cover mounting holes...

10. Remove the cylinder head cover gasket from the grooves.

11. Clean and degrease the cover grooves. Install a new gasket into the cover grooves and apply sealant to the areas where it contacts the front camshaft bearing caps (on the semicircular recesses of the gasket) and with the rear end of the cylinder head (on the semicircular projections of the gasket).

12. Install the cylinder head cover and all removed parts in the reverse order of removal.

Note: Tighten the cylinder head cover mounting bolts gradually (Fig. 5.3) crosswise from the center to the edges.
