The filter element (more often called an "oil filter", similar to replaceable filters in a metal housing) must be replaced every time the engine oil is changed. Reuse is not permitted. During operation, the filter element gradually becomes clogged with engine wear products and resinous deposits. At the same time, the filter's throughput capacity decreases, which leads to a drop in pressure in the lubrication system, while the pressure developed by the oil pump to the filter will increase. When the difference between these pressures increases to a certain level, the bypass valve will open and the oil will flow around the filter element. At the same time, it can capture the deposits that have settled on it and carry them to the rubbing parts, which will sharply accelerate their wear. The same thing can happen if, in cold weather, with an unheated engine and excessively thick oil, the crankshaft speed is increased too high.
Electronic spare parts catalogs (they are available from spare parts dealers and online) allow you to select an oil filter by the vehicle identification number (VIN). In this case, all design features of the car will be automatically taken into account, which will eliminate errors. It is advisable to use the original oil filter (gM part number 93 185 674). The original kit includes a rubber sealing ring for the oil filter cover. When purchasing a non-original part, make sure that the filter manufacturer allows its use on your vehicle model. Do not purchase oil filters from an unknown manufacturer.
