Perform a generator test as follows:
1. Inspect the belt and wires.
2. With the ignition switch in the on position and the engine stopped, the charge indicator light should be on. If it is not, disconnect the wiring harness from the alternator and ground the "L" terminal through a 5-amp fused jumper wire.
- If the lamp lights up, replace the generator. See "Generator" in the "Car maintenance" section.
- If the lamp does not light, check for an open circuit between the ignition switch and the wiring harness connector. The test lamp may be burned out.
3. With the ignition on and the engine running at medium speed, the charge indicator lamp should not light. If this is not the case, disconnect the wiring harness from the generator.
- If the lamp goes out, replace the generator. See "Generator" in the "Car maintenance" section.
- If the lamp remains on, check for a short to ground between the connector and the test lamp.
Important: Always check the generator output before assuming that the generator is faulty due to a short to ground on the "L" terminal. See "Generator" in the "Unit repair" section.
