Gear Shift Cable (1995 and later models) — Removal, Installation and Adjustment (Chevrolet Tahoe 1)

1. Disconnect the battery from ground.

2. Set the car to the parking brake.

3. Block the wheels and move the transmission lever to the Neutral position.

4. On some vehicles, remove the transfer case shield.

5. Pry and disconnect the cable from the shaft on the transmission (see photo).

5. Pry and disconnect the cable from the shaft on the transmission (see photo).


6. Remove the cable from the clamp on the transmission pan.

7. Remove the cable sheath retainer (see photo).

8. Squeeze the cable sheath retaining clip and pull the cable towards the rear of the vehicle.

9. Remove the steering column trim.

10. Pry and disconnect the cable from the transmission selector (see photo).

11. Squeeze the cable sheath mounting bracket and pull the cable towards the front of the vehicle, disconnect the cable at the steering column bracket.



12. Remove the trim of the niche under the windshield, the trim of the threshold, then remove the seat.

13. Remove the cable from the floor clamps and seals.

14. Lift the driver's side carpet and remove the cable together with the sealing boot.

15. Installation is carried out in reverse order.

16. Set the car to the parking brake.

17. Remove the cable housing retaining clip from the rear transmission bracket.

18. Disconnect the gear indicator adjuster from the shaft.

19. Move the transmission selector shaft to the Neutral position.

20. Move the transmission selector on the steering column to the Neutral position.

21. Remove the U-shaped cable sheath retainer.

22. Remove the cable from the clamp on the transmission pan.

23. Insert the cable back into the clamp on the pallet.

24. Place the gear indicator adjuster on the transmission selector shaft and secure it.

25. Move the cable sheath retainer until it is locked in place (determined by a characteristic click).

26. Insert the U-shaped cable sheath retainer into place.

27. Check the adjustment. The transmission selector should move to all positions, and the engine should start only in the selector positions P or N. Repeat the adjustment if necessary. If necessary, also adjust the position of the locking switch.
