Outer tie rod (Chevrolet Tahoe 2)

Removal



1. Raise the vehicle and place safety posts under the frame.

Note: Do not use a wedge to separate the ball joints, as this may damage the joint boot. Use a special puller.


2. Unscrew the nut (2) of the ball joint (3) of the steering rod (6).

2. Unscrew the nut (2) of the ball joint (3) of the steering rod (6).


3. Using a puller, separate the steering rod ball joint from the steering knuckle.

Note: Do not reinstall the ball joint mounting nut.


4. Loosen the lock nut of the tip (4) of the steering rod (6), remove the tip.

6. Check the steering rod for deformation and the condition of the threads.

7. Clean the ball joint seat on the steering knuckle.

Installation



1. Lubricate the tie rod threads with chassis grease.



2. Install the tip (4) tight (6).

3. Insert the stud (3) of the ball joint into the steering knuckle (1).

4. Install and tighten the NEW ball joint mounting nut (2).

Tightening torque:
  • 1500 series - 50 Nm.
  • 2500 series - 65 Nm.

5. Adjust the front wheel alignment.
