2. Remove the gear shift lever.
3. Raise the vehicle and place it on stands.
4. Drain the transmission oil.
5. Remove the axle shaft (see Chapter 8). Cover the hole in the gearbox with a plastic bag.
6. On all-wheel drive models, remove the transfer case.
7. Remove all parking brake components and assemblies that may interfere with gearbox removal.
8. To expand the working space, remove all necessary parts of the exhaust system.
9. Disconnect all wire connectors from the gearbox.
10. On pre-1995 models, remove the clutch slave cylinder, set it aside and secure it. On 1996 and later models, disconnect the clutch slave cylinder tube using a special wrench. Plug the holes in the cylinder.
11. At a regular checkpoint (with aluminum crankcase) remove the inspection hatch.
12. Mark the location of all wiring harness clamps and clips on the gearbox housing and disconnect them.
13. Raise the engine either with a hoist or a jack through a wooden block placed under the oil pan. When removing the gearbox, the engine must be raised.
14. Raise the gearbox with a jack; it is recommended to use a special jack-trolley on which the gearbox is secured with chains.
15. Unscrew the nuts of the crossmember mounting bolts. Raise the gearbox and remove the crossmember.
16. On models with a cast iron gearbox, unscrew the bolts securing the gearbox to the clutch housing, remove the spring washers. On models with an aluminum gearbox housing, unscrew the bolts securing the gearbox to the engine.
17. Make sure all wires are disconnected from the transmission, then move the transmission on a jack dolly towards the rear of the car until the input shaft comes out of the clutch housing (or from the clutch basket). Maintain the position of the gearbox, avoiding any tilting.
18. Lower the jack and remove the gearbox from under the car.
Attention! It is not allowed to press the clutch pedal when the gearbox is removed.
19. Check the condition of the clutch components (on models with cast iron gearboxes, you need to remove the clutch housing). As a rule, when the gearbox is removed, the clutch parts are changed.
20. Install the clutch (if the clutch was removed).
21. On models with a 4-speed cast iron transmission, install the clutch housing (if the crankcase was removed) and tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
22. Install the gearbox on a jack trolley and lift it so that the gearbox is in place, then carefully move the gearbox forward and insert the input shaft into the clutch disc hub. If necessary, move the gearbox slightly so that the shaft splines enter the clutch disc splines.
23. Tighten and tighten the gearbox mounting bolts to the engine to the specified torque.
24. Install the gearbox on the crossmember. Tighten all nuts and bolts.
25. Remove the engine hoists and remove the jack.
26. Install all removed parts, using the marks made during disassembly as a guide.
Transfer case (if provided) set according to Chapter 7B.
27. Remove the vehicle from the stands.
28. Install the gear shift lever.
29. After finishing, take a drive and make sure there are no oil leaks from the gearbox.
