Repair of the engine control unit (ECM) comes down to either replacing the unit or reprogramming the EEPROM RAM. If the decision to replace the ECM is made as a result of diagnostics, choose the right ECM type for a specific vehicle and engine.
Warning:
- Before removing any engine management system component, turn off the ignition to avoid damaging the engine control unit.
- Damage to the engine control unit can be caused by contact between the metal housing of the unit and the battery voltage. When servicing the control unit, it is recommended to disconnect the battery from the vehicle wiring.
- Before disconnecting the ECU connector, clean the surfaces around the connector. After disconnecting, check the condition of the connector seal, install the gasket correctly to prevent dirt from entering the connector.
- The new control unit must be programmed.
Note: It is necessary to record the remaining service life of the engine oil, otherwise the control unit will consider the engine oil as new, therefore (if the oil life is not entered) after replacing the ECM, change the oil after 5000 km.
Removal
1. Use a scanner to calculate the remaining service life of the engine oil.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Early models
3. Remove the control unit cover.

4. Loosen the bolts (2) securing the control unit wiring connectors and disconnect the connectors.

Late models
3. Disconnect the retainer (2) of the upper wire bundle and disconnect the connector (1) of the control unit.
4. Disconnect the retainer (3) of the lower wire bundle and disconnect the connector (4) of the control unit.

All models
5. Release the ECM mounting clips from the bracket.
