On 1987-1995 models, a conventional ignition system with a distributor is used, on models from 1996 with a SFI injection system, an advanced ignition system is used. The conventional ignition system (pre-1995) consists of an ignition distributor, a coil with a sensor and an electronic module. The distributor of the advanced ignition system contains only a camshaft position sensor and a rotor. Ignition control is provided by the crankshaft position sensor and the processor unit. The ignition timing is automatically adjusted by the processor unit.
The processor processes signals from various sensors and calculates the optimal ignition timing. All systems also use signals from the knock sensor. The ignition coil is installed separately on all models.
In an advanced ignition system, the electronic module is mounted next to the coil.
Typical arrangement of electrical components for 5.0/5.7 liter V8 engines
1. Generator
2. Spark plug
3. Ignition distributor, coil and electronic ignition unit
4. Battery and battery cable
5. Drive belts
6. Starter and starter solenoid relay (at the bottom of the engine, in the transmission housing)
